Shutts & Bowen is seeking a Litigation Paralegal. The ideal candidate has experience supporting attorneys through all phases of litigation.
Essential Functions:
Assist attorneys in all stages of litigation cases from onset through post-trial.
Oversee organization, maintenance, and appropriate utilization of documents and other case-related materials, including maintenance of client-presentable and efficient work areas and case rooms.
Assists and manages the discovery process, prepares for depositions, propounds and responds to written discoveries, and prepares for expert discovery.
Oversees and conducts document reviews and document productions; prepares documentation regarding criteria changes; tracks and reports on review progress and results.
Perform analytical tasks, prepare witness interview memoranda, review and summarize documents, depositions, and court transcripts, and create and use substantive coding tools.
Assists with basic legal research, including locating cases, statutes, and regulatory materials; conducts fact research on the internet and private search engines, such as Westlaw.
Assists with law and motion practice, assembles motion papers and exhibits, coordinates filings of pleadings and briefs, and ensures proper service.
Draft common pleadings, motions, notices, and other court filings.
Ensure compliance with federal and state rules of procedure and evidence for document format, content, filing, etc.
Performs and oversees both simple and complex authority and fact cite-checking; confirms case quotes, proofreads briefs, and other legal documents.
Assists and manages trial preparations, creates trial notebooks, identifies and organizes exhibits, coordinates witness schedules, maintains trial calendars, and communicates effectively with opposing counsel and courtroom staff.
Assists in preparation of post-trial filings, including briefings, motions for costs and sanctions, etc, and organizes the case for appeal if necessary.
Maintains timely and accurate timekeeping records daily.
Assists with other department activities as needed, and performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Must demonstrate attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
Capability to handle various tasks without error, set priorities, and accommodate rush requests.
Knowledge of legal terms and matters to ensure that submitted forms include all necessary related parties.
Strong analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving skills with great attention to detail.
Superior communication and customer service skills, demonstrating courtesy and diplomacy.
Ability to think creatively about new solutions and implement best practices.
Generally, core working hours are from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, with the flexibility to work overtime as needed.
Physical attendance and punctuality at the workplace are required.
Education and Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of litigation experience is required.
Paralegal certificate is a plus.
Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Physical Demands:
Ability to perform the essential functions of the role with or without reasonable accommodation.
Prolong periods of sitting and working on a computer.
Occasional standing, walking and movement within an office environment.
May occasionally lift or move items up to ten pounds.
