O’Melveny has an immediate opening for a Competitive Intelligence Analyst in any of our West Coast offices.
The Competitive Intelligence ("CI") Analyst will be responsible for producing strategic research on clients, industries, practices, competitors, legal issues, and emerging trends. The Analyst will be a front line resource in preparing research deliverables as requested by attorneys, business development staff, and firmwide leadership. The position will report to our Competitive Intelligence Manager and sit within our Business Intelligence and Marketing Technology unit, part of the firm’s broader Client Development department.
This is an exciting opportunity for a strong research professional interested in shaping the next-generation of CI with a strong focus on the application of data analytics and artificial intelligence solutions at a top-tier international law firm. The candidate should be a big picture thinker who can identify relevant data, patterns, and trends and synthesize them into succinct briefings and visuals. CI is a dynamic function with research needs spanning a variety of legal and business topics across our firm - we are interested in creative problem solvers who are eager to tackle novel research questions using the latest technology.
The salary range in CA for this role is $110,000 - $130,000 and represents the firm’s good faith minimum and maximum range for this role at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Conducting legal and business research using platforms including: Lexis, Westlaw,Bloomberg Law, S&P Capital IQ, Pitchbook, Lex Machina, Courthouse News, PACER, and other providers
Preparing research reports on companies, industries, practices, competitors, legal issues, and emerging legal trends to facilitate business development efforts
Leveraging artificial intelligence tools for research, with a developed understanding of the risks, benefits, and suitable use cases among different platforms (e.g. Harvey, Copilot, Gemini, and AI tools embedded into legacy resources)
Curating data-driven newsletters involving clients, practices, industries, peers, and emerging trends - familiarity with Lexis Newsdesk or similar news aggregators a plus
Tracking emerging legal issues and trends by creating and processing alerts to update attorneys on key developments
Proactively connecting data from the firm's intranet, CRM, and Experience Databases with external market developments to create actionable business opportunities
Assisting with the firm's Litigation and Trend Spotting initiative to drive business opportunities for attorneys in real-time
Preparing ROI reports to support CI initiatives
The ideal candidate will:
Have 3-5 years of experience in competitive intelligence, market intelligence, corporate research, or a similar role in a law firm or professional services setting
Be able to work independently and balance competing deadlines in a fast paced environment
Be a highly communicative team player with strong attention to detail
Have advanced skills in core business software: Excel, Word, PowerPoint
Have experience with most of our online research platforms, including:Lexis. Westlaw,Bloomberg Law, S&P Capital IQ, Pitchbook, Lex Machina, Courthouse News, PACER
A Bachelor's degree or higher; candidates with either a JD, MBA, or MLS/MLIS are preferred
