Forward Deployed Engineering is a role where engineers embed with business teams to build and operate AI agent solutions end to end, spanning model integration, agent development, evaluation, and guardrails. The day-to-day work of owning production AI systems inside a business unit, rather than building a product or a generic platform, is a function that barely existed as a standard job before the wave of LLM deployments.
The Senior Consultant, Software Engineering (Forward Deployed Engineering) leads the design, development, deployment, and continuous improvement of complex AI solutions that address priority business needs and deliver measurable enterprise value.
Working closely with business teams, product partners, and AI platform engineers, this role provides technical direction across model integration, agent development, cloud and software architecture, evaluation, observability, security and privacy, governance, reliability, and cost management, while applying and contributing to reusable enterprise capabilities such as model access, LLM-as-a-Service, AgentCore, MCP services, guardrails, and enablement tools.
The role distinguishes solution-specific engineering from shared platform engineering, establishes clear service boundaries with AI Platform Engineering, and ensures that reusable capabilities are contributed back where appropriate. The role extends shared AI Platform Engineering capabilities, and has operational accountability for the production readiness, reliability, supportability, lifecycle health, and measurable outcomes of the AI solutions within its scope.
The ideal candidate brings deep AI and software engineering expertise, strong technical judgment, operational accountability, and the ability to guide engineers, influence cross-functional decisions, navigate ambiguity, and balance rapid solution delivery with responsible AI practices, long-term maintainability, reuse, and measurable business outcomes.
