Job Description
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking an experienced industry leader to serve as the Director of Media, Entertainment, Games & Sports (MEGS) for Japan. This is a critical general management role that sits at the intersection of deep industry expertise and cloud technology transformation within one of the world's most dynamic and sophisticated media and gaming markets.
Japan represents a uniquely complex and high-potential market for MEGS, encompassing globally significant gaming companies, major broadcast and streaming platforms, world-class sports organizations, and cutting-edge entertainment studios. The successful candidate will serve as the architect of AWS's MEGS strategy in Japan — combining deep domain knowledge with AWS's technological capabilities to drive growth, innovation, and customer success. This role operates within a hybrid reporting structure, partnering closely with the Global MEGS IBU Leader on industry strategy, best practices, and cross-geo initiatives while executing locally under Japan leadership. The ideal candidate thrives in matrixed environments and values the opportunity to both shape and be shaped by a global industry community of practice.
Key job responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Industry Strategy & Innovation
- Develop and execute a comprehensive MEGS industry strategy for Japan, accounting for local market dynamics, customer profiles, and competitive landscape
- Drive industry-specific technological innovation, including accelerating adoption of Generative AI, data foundations, modernization, and cloud-native solutions across media, entertainment, gaming, and sports customers
- Evangelize the use of GenAI and all AWS services to solve critical MEGS industry challenges unique to the Japanese market
- Identify and prioritize technical innovations (e.g., cloud gaming, live streaming, AI-driven content creation, digital fan engagement) that address Japan-specific opportunities
Customer Engagement & Growth
- Build and maintain executive relationships at the C-suite level with Japan's leading MEGS customers, positioning AWS as a strategic transformation partner
- Serve as a trusted industry advisor who deeply understands customer dynamics, industry economics, trends, and pain points within Japanese MEGS
- Own revenue targets for directly managed accounts and drive broader accountability for MEGS industry revenue throughout AWS Japan
- Develop strategies for all MEGS customers in Japan — not just the top accounts — ensuring a scalable go-to-market approach
Business Strategy & P&L Management
- Create and drive a business strategy that enables business transformation for Japanese MEGS customers
- Manage the industry P&L, identifying key growth opportunities and allocating resources appropriately
- Anticipate industry disruptors (regulatory changes, technology shifts, competitive moves, geopolitical factors) and adjust strategy accordingly
- Ensure one-off sales opportunities align with strategic industry positioning in the Japan market
Organizational Leadership & Cross-Functional Influence
- Influence without authority across multiple organizational boundaries — including Service Owners, Partners, AGS Japan, Solutions Architecture, and Talent Acquisition
- Navigate the complex matrix organization to drive results, building partnerships across AWS Japan, APJC, and global MEGS teams
- Create mechanisms to enable knowledge transfer from the Japan MEGS team across broader AWS
- Partner with the Global MEGS IBU Leader on industry strategy alignment, global account coordination, talent development priorities, and cross-geo best-practice sharing; operate effectively within a hybrid reporting structure that balances local execution with global strategic direction
- Hold partner teams accountable for delivery expectations while helping them resolve internal resource constraints
Team Building & Talent Development
- Build and lead a high-performing MEGS team in Japan by attracting and developing top industry talent
- Create robust succession plans for critical roles and develop leadership bench strength
- Ensure diverse representation and foster an inclusive team culture
- Mentor and develop direct reports through stretch opportunities and leadership exposure
Basic Qualifications
- 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in media, entertainment, gaming, or sports industries
- Experience in senior leadership roles (Director level or above) with direct P&L ownership and team management responsibility
- Demonstrated track record of building and scaling businesses, achieving revenue targets, and managing complex enterprise sales cycles
- Deep understanding of the Japanese market landscape for MEGS, including key players, industry dynamics, regulatory environment, and cultural business norms
- Experience leading end-to-end digital transformation programs or cloud adoption initiatives within enterprise organizations
- Business-level fluency in Japanese (spoken and written) and professional proficiency in English
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with or within major Japanese media, entertainment, gaming, or sports organizations
- Strong knowledge of cloud computing technologies, AI/ML, and their application to media & entertainment workflows (content creation, distribution, gaming infrastructure, live sports production)
- Track record of building C-suite relationships at Fortune 500 / Global 2000 enterprises in Japan
- Experience navigating matrixed global organizations and driving outcomes through influence rather than direct authority
- Background in management consulting, technology sales leadership, or general management within a technology company serving MEGS customers
- Experience adapting global strategies to local Japan market needs while maintaining alignment with broader organizational goals
- MBA or advanced degree in a relevant field
